Standards organizations recognize value of professional thermographic surveys

Certified Thermographers and Ongoing Training: Our commitment to certification, education and training is unsurpassed in the industry. Infra-red Analyzers’ Certified Thermographers have completed courses of study and passed examinations as specified by the American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT). In addition to ASNT certification, we provide ongoing training and support to our staff in all applications of thermographic testing.

Celebrating Our 20th Anniversary: Founded in 1984, Infra-red Analyzers is an independent, professional consulting firm. The information we provide is complete and unbiased. We do not sell or install any building materials. A partial list of our satisfied customers includes such Fortune 500 companies as GE, IBM, General Dynamics, Milton Bradley, Georgia Pacific, International Paper, Norton Company, and James River Corporation. We are listed with Dun & Bradstreet.

Professional Outreach and Education: We make presentations on infrared thermography and nondestructive testing to industry groups throughout the Northeast. We encourage the development of industry-wide professional standards to ensure that the public receives the full benefits of this technology. Our president has also trained thermographers at the national level.

Recent technical manuals published by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the InterNational Electrical Testing Association (NETA) prominently recommend the use of infrared inspection in the testing and maintenance of electrical systems and components.

Every year in the United States, faulty electrical/lighting equipment causes more than 45,000 structural fires. On average, these fires kill 240 people, injure 1,200, and inflict more than $1 billion in direct property damage. (1) Infrared testing has become the most widely recommended method for detecting these critical electrical faults before they cause catastrophic fires.

What the experts say..

National Fire Protection Association: NFPA 70B - Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment Maintenance, 2002 Edition

"Routine infrared inspections of energized electrical systems should be performed annually..." - 20.17.5

"Infrared inspections of electrical systems are beneficial to reduce the number of costly and catastrophic equipment failures and unscheduled plant shutdowns." - 20.17.1

"[Infrared] inspections have uncovered a multitude of potentially dangerous situations. Proper diagnosis and remedial action of these situations have also helped to prevent numerous major losses." - 20.17.1.1

"Infrared detection can be accurate, reliable, and expedient to use in a variety of electrical installations. More important, it can be relatively inexpensive to use considering the savings often realized by preventing equipment damage and business interruptions." - 20.17.2.1

"Many organizations are finding it preferable to obtain these surveys from qualified outside contractors. Because of their more extensive experience, their findings and recommendations are likely to be more accurate, practical, and economical than those of a part-time in-house team." - 20.17.3 More information..

InterNational Electrical Testing Association: NETA MTS-2005 - Maintenance Testing Specifications For Electrical Power Distribution Equipment and Systems, 2005 Edition

The latest NETA manual lists infrared thermography as a recommended inspection procedure for nearly every category of electrical equipment, including switchgear, switchboard assemblies, transformers, cables, cutouts, circuit breakers, and much more. More information..
